Corruption did not kill Angelo Reyes

Dear insansapinas,

Corruption did not kill Angelo Reyes; it is the feeling of hopelessness which did. If corruption really kills, except for a few, there would be no one left standing as public servant. OR they have so callused a conscience that they become insensitive to the public opinion. If I were to believe the latter, I would surmise that the late Angelo Reyes was unlike others who can live with their conscience?

In the government, your fate is decided by whoever is your patron. Even a person who committed a heinous crime can be freed if they find someone who could become their "ninong". The people accused of crime can only get a slap in the wrist if they have someone who could guarantee for them once they're exonerated from crime they have committed. That is justice in the Philippines. It is not what you are but who you know.

The last words of Angelo Reyes hinted the desperation that he's all alone in the fight. He was in the crossroad.  It was mentioned by Robles that he was taking meds because of his heart disease. There are meds which one  of the side effects  is depression. In the Philippines, when they give you the meds, thery do not bother to tell you the side effect. Here in the States, together with the meds is a paper describing the meds, the directions to use, the other meds that may bring complications and the list of possible side effects that may be experienced. They even advise you to contact the doctor or stop the meds if it gives you the thought of committing suicide. Chemical imbalance and great stress make people do irrational things.

For those who have lived charmed lives; no mountains to conquer, no " crocodile" to fight to achieve the goal; attended private universities; and found jobs not because of qualifications but because of the parents' connections,  the public humiliation may not kill them.

But someone who has worked hard to reach the top, the career and life built are something they feel worth protecting. The public  humiliation suffered by Reyes in the investigating committee is enough to drive him to the brink. Shame brought to him by making him helpless because he can not defend himself; shut up by a lower in rank military officer whose good manners and right conduct must have been eaten by his ego added to the bruised pride of the general.

I do not say he is innocent but he is until proven guilty. The manner by which Trillanes interrogated him could make a lawyer object on the basis of badgering a witness and putting the witness or resource person under trial when he is not the one being investigated.

Grandstanding at its best by some lawmakers not as aid for legislation but an aid for settling a score.

resty,
