Stuck at the Airport is no fun

Dear insansapinas,
Ewan ko pero kahit na anopang gawin ng babaeng ito, hindi niya ako makaconvince you can do something funny when you are stuck at the airport. *heh*

At least sa Singapore pwede mong icheck-in ang luggage mo sa kanilang dayrooms/checked -in carry on.

O kaya may portable kang DVD player at marami kang dalang DVD/CD.

SUS.

Tapos may dumating na isang babae. Tinanguan ko as a greeting, Inisnab ako. TSEH.

LV ang kaniyang carry-on.

At panay ginto ha, nakakasilaw.

Toinkk.

Miss You Like Crazy

 Dear insansapinas,

I am not referring to John Lloyd-Bea movie.

I am referring to our own cougar--Vick Belo. Cougar refers to a woman whose lover slash husband slash boyfriend is much younger than she is. Kagaya nina Demi Moore, Ivana Trump at Cher.

Cristalle feels disappointed over Vicki’s broken promise
Cristalle Henares is disappointed with her mother Vicki Belo when she gave in to her “weakness” and saw her ex-boyfriend Hayden Kho recently.
A few weeks back the famous-yet-controversial doctor announced that she and the embattled ex-doctor are not seeing each other until the latter’s birthday on May 20.
Vicki’s daughter added that, “Hindi [niya] naman talaga napigilan ‘yung puso [niya] eh.”
Araw ng arraignment kay Hayden noong nakaraang Martes, upon the advice of her lawyer ay sumipot ang doktora sa korte to lend moral support to her ex-boyfriend. “When I saw him nga, he’s still guwapo pa rin. Pero wala na ‘yung addiction to him, just kilig,” sabi ni Vicky

My friend sympathizes with Crystalle.

Last year, meron na namang nanligaw sa kaniyang nanay na at the age of 65 ay nagtatrabaho pa.

Earthquake, Snowstorm and Tsunami?

Dear insansapinas,

Chile was hit by an 8.8 earthquake today killing more than 70 people which is believed to increase in number as the extent of damage is fully ascertained.

There is now a high level of alert for tsunami around coastal areas of Hawaii, US and even Philippines.

Hardly the third snowstorm had passed when another snowstorm is expected by Wednesday in the Northeast America.

Yesterday, despite the wind howling, I went to the grocery store. There are store shelves which are almost empty. I thought the store was not replenishing its stocks on display. Then I saw people buying by the bulk. Hmmm hoarding. So I bought a big bag of potato chips. Maubusan pa ako. Yum.

In  New York, New Jersey and Philadelphia, almost a million people have no power. More than a thousand flights were cancelled but airports remained open.

I know how it is to be stranded. You wish you grow wings so you can fly.

The Mansion

Dear insansapinas,
So I got the e-mail showing the mansion of a certain presidential candidate. SO? Not my type. I've seen a mansion in the Philippines where everything is gilded with gold. He is not even a politician but he cornered many construction projects of the government.

When I was a newbie here in US, a friend brought me to an exclusive village where most of the residents were from the Philippines. He he pointed to me the mansions of so and so--mostly politicians, retired, semi-retired, active or incumbent. Then he whispered to me that there was where the "kurakots" were being brought by these corrupt government servants out of the country. The flight of the dollars.  Some mansions are owned by prominent businessmen who also put up businesses in the US of A and other parts of the globe. Never would they be caught  again with all their eggs in one basket-Philippines. Pag kinamkam nga naman, wala na. That is one of the legacies of EDSA 1--the elite stashing their wealth abroad for security.

And there were countries who gave them citizenship in exchange of a million dollar investment.

So while the OFWs were sending dollars to the Philippines for the much needed dollar reserves for trades and payments, the rich are also sending their dollars abroad for safekeeping.

Remember the eurodollar generals? They are running for elective positions.

Remember the son of General Garcia who bought a unit in Trump Tower out of the funds his father plundered from the military? Ayon, nagpaparetrato pa kasama ang mga movers and shakers ng fashion sa New York.

What about a building in New York who is alleged to be owned by the former First Lady?

The question is where did the wealth come from. Was it illegally gotten?

Pink Slips

Dear insansapinas

When you receive pink slips, that means good bye, job, hello unemployment.

In Rhode Island school, not one but all teachers received pink slips from the school board meaning at the end of the school year they have to go.

Randi Kaye
CNN

A school board in Rhode Island has voted to fire all teachers at a struggling high school, a dramatic and controversial plan aimed at shoring up education in a poverty-ridden school district.
On Tuesday night, the board approved the plan by Frances Gallo, superintendent at Central Falls School District, to discharge 88 teachers at Central Falls High School.
The firings come over the district's concern that teachers refused to spend more time with students to improve test scores.
But a teachers' union spokesman called the firings "drastic" and cited a 21 percent rise in reading scores and a 3 percent hike in math scores in two years.
The terminations will go into effect in the next school year at Central Falls, one of the lowest-performing schools in the state.

According to the news, the teachers were asked to spend just additional 25 minutes for tutoring students.

Fifty per cent of the students at that high school are failing from their classes. Reading scores are only slightly above 50 per cent and so are the math scores.  AND THIS IS HIGH SCHOOL, not elementary.

Kumustahin naman ang suweldo nila-- $ 72 to 78 thousand a year.

Lost Luggage

 Dear insansapinas,

One of my nightmares in travelling is lost luggage. So I see to it that I do not put my extra medication in my checked in luggage.

I also bring with me at least extra undies and shirt in my carryon. Ganiyan ako kaparanoid. Just in case, I get stranded, I will have something extra to wear.

And it just happened when I took a vacation recently and was stranded in Detroit on my way home because of the snowstorm that shut down Washington DC for a week.

My checked in luggage was dropped at the conveyor built on its way to Washington, DC minutes before I saw that my flight and all flights were cancelled.

In case, like this, airline may give you personal kit wihich includes one big shirt, comb, toothpaste, toothbrush, and shave for men.

In the hotel, I met a Filipina who was worried sick because she did not have her medication for her hypertension. It was in her checked-in luggage. Cancelled flights and unavailable hotel reservations made her blood pressure go up.

Upon arriving at Reagan International Airport when flights were resumed, I was directed to the baggage area. And there I saw my luggage among the suitcases that were grouped according to their date of arrivals.

How did I recognize my luggage? I put colorful name tag, a red strip  of neon tape across the body and a little ribbon wrapped around one of the handles. It had been my experience that suit cases looked the same when they are put together or they are circling in the carousel. To spot the luggage easily, you have to put something that makes it stand out.

This news said that mishandling luggage is reduced is a welcome news. Have you ever been in the baggage claim area? When I failed to get my luggage in the San Francisco Airport several years ago from Los Angeles, I was about to file a lost baggage claim. I saw opened suticases with contents sprawled all over the floor of the office where I was directed to see if I can find it.  I am lucky that my luggage was just misplaced.

This is the news:

According to statistics recently released by the Department of Transportation (DOT), in 2009, major U.S. carriers reduced the rate of mishandled, mangled and lost bags to the lowest level recorded since 2004.
Hooray, right? Don’t fall off your chair just yet. Last year, major airlines mishandled “just” 3.91 bags per 1,000 passengers. It’s an improvement over 2008's rate of 5.26, but data show more than 2.19 million pieces of luggage went missing in 2009.

Battle of the Surveys at Battle of the Bloggers

Dear insansapinas,

In this corner, with 3,000 respondents... blah blah blah. In the blue corner with 1,800 respondents...blah blah blah

photocredit:MSNBC

Pag gusto nila, tahimik sila at panay payagpag.

Si Tatad ay may mga katanungan.

1.    Who sponsored the survey, and who conducted it?
2.    What is the sampling method used?
3.    What is the population that was sampled?
4.    What is the size and description of the population that serves as the primary basis of the survey report?
5.    The exact wording of questions asked, the order in which they were asked, the text of any instruction or explanation to the interviewer or respondent that might reasonably affect the response.
6.    A discussion of the precision of the findings, including estimates of sampling error and a description of any weighting or estimating procedures used.
7.    Which results are based on parts of the sample rather than the total sample, and the size of such parts.
8.    The method, location and dates of data collection.

The Antibiotics, the Sambong and the Flu

Dear insansapinas,

Antibiotics

Yucks.

The Bakasyon

Dear insansapinas,
Bear with me while I present you the pics that I took with my cheap camera.

May bading bang alimango? Meron daw.

Crab. Pagkatapos naghiwalay silang mag-asawa after 16 months. Nagkalmutan yata.

The beaten path

Akala ko ba cool off muna sila. Ano ba yan lokohan.

TSEH.

3 presidential bets vow to open their bank records

Liberal Party standard bearer Senator Benigno “Noynoy" Aquino III, independent presidential candidate Senator Ana Consuelo "Jamby" Madrigal and Ang Kapatiran Party’s Olongapo City Councilor JC de los Reyes all agreed to waive their rights to their bank accounts’ secrecy.

Ubo. ubo.

Newsworthy at cybercafe

Dear insansapinas,

Hanep talaga pag celebrity, kahit maliit na balita, nasa headline. Root canal lang naibalita pa. SUS.

LOS ANGELES - Lil Wayne’s jail sentence was delayed for dental surgery — and the rapper made sure he used it to have everything taken care of all at once.
According to TMZ, the Tuesday dental surgery provided the MC with a whopping eight root canals. The procedure lasted eight hours and also included several redone tooth implants, additional implants and work on his grill and remaining teeth.

' No ba yan?

KRIS Aquino news

Kris news is news.

JAKARTA—Indonesian police raided Internet cafes Monday and rounded up dozens of students who were skipping school to play computer games or chat with their friends online.
The raids in the town of Bandung, West Java, came in response to complaints from parents and teachers about children missing classes to spend time on the Internet, an official said.
"We raided 23 Internet cafes and rounded up 89 students. Many were in their school uniforms," Bandung city official Suparno told AFP.
"They should be in school during school hours but instead they were playing computer games, chatting online and checking their Facebook profiles."

Yahoo.

Book Deals

Dear insansapinas,
One of the people I had communicated with during my vacation was my former boss in the consultancy firm which sent me to seminars as speaker in finance and accounting. She is still very active in the academe and accounting education that she is tasked of writing instructional materials for finance, management and accounting.

Knowing that I published mine before I left the Philippines, she offered me  to co-author with her--that is I will do the writing of the texts and she does the editing and the inclusion of cases and problems  in the local scenario.

But wait, there is a time frame-- to finish the draft before April for two books. Hello!!!

Rewind:

When I came up with my first book, manual and practise set, it took me five years to finish . For five years, I brought with me that fat, ugly brown collapsible folder wherever I go even though I was not doing any writing. It became my security blanket. I slept with it near my pillows. It was in my car even when I was just doing some shopping.

Then I lost it. It took me months to rewrite it. The advantage of writing it by myself was that it was all stored in my mind. The information just flow like water without let-up. But then, I have to focus. So focused that when you meet me at the hallway, I may greet you but remind me later of the meeting and I may have no memory of it at all.

When the book was released and marketed, I bought my second car.

Business plan:

It also happened to me when I was preparing the business plan for the school that I helped put up in California.

Fast Forward:

Para sa book project, I started borrowing materials from the library. I am used to reading while lying down.

And I thought, I am going to enjoy my early retirement? Pagbukas ko ng first page ng libro na aking first reference, umatake ang aking ulcer. Aray. Stress na naman.

I have up to March to think. That would be a few days from now. UHmmmm.

Crossroads

Dear insansapinas,

A young friend-mother sought opinion regarding a problem that she faces right now, a choice between her career and being a full-time mother to her baby.

I was faced with that kind of problem years ago. The only difference was that I have no choice but to develop my career;otherwise, I may have not have given my kids the  life of comfort and education they  enjoyed.

Looking back, I feel that  being stay-at-home mom does not guarantee to have successful children in their career and families.

When I made a balikbayan this year, I felt that neighbors were not happy to see me. Ang sakit di va?

Because I did not stay in my own house, I just gathered gossips from my relatives why the kind of reception every time I go home.

Most of these women were full time stay-at-home moms when they were raising their young children. They drove them  to exclusive schools, came home to supervise the household and shopped until they dropped.

Things like those.

I am amused. Kung alam lang nila na I regarded them as lucky.

Massage

Dear insansapinas,

My nose is "running" and I got a croaking voice due to my coughing. Just to let you know why I can't blog. *heh*

This video of the cat massaging another cat reminds me of my friend who cracked one of her backbones during the massage.

Toinkk. Pakinggan ninyo ang pusang ito.

I will scratch your back and you scratch mine

Dear insansapinas,

When I was packing my things for my vacation, I thought I was going to bring my back scratcher. Silly me.

The Friends

Dear insansapinas,
My latest vacation was my third since I migrated to the US and every time, I come home, my former faculty, my former office mates and my former boss were there to see me.

The former faculty members decided to come to the house when I told them, I will not be able to travel and walk without the aid of a walking stick especially when my legs and feet became swollen after I got off from the airplane. My brother assured me that he had the same swelling when he took a vacation last December. The flight was too long so that fluids flow to hte extremities while seated for many hours in the cabin.

So they brought food and we talked.

We had a grand time. I mourned for those who passed away. Two died of stroke; one was a victim of robbery and the older ones already retired.

I am happy that after all the years, they still remember and were very enthusiastic to hear me tell my US experience. While there were office politics that made them just polite to each other, they set it aside and enjoyed reminiscing our good old days. Some of my projects have been retained.

The only one who was absent was the person who conspired with the President to eliminate me when I was still the dean. She is now the dean of  the College of Business administration when another college that of Accountancy and Economics was separated as a unit I heard that she was also responsible for the removal of the president. There are no permanent friends ; only vested interests. Hohohoo.

Yes, Virginia, even in the academe, there are a lot of intrigues and ass-kissing. And I did not know how to kiss ass. And my former faculty also learned from me that there is no respect when someone got the position because of being in the right place, right time and favorite person.

My former boss also came. He was a ranking government official in the Education sector. He asked me if I am interested to teach again. I said no. With the traffic and the heat, I could no longer  afford to go from one university to another.

No, I did not see any blogger. I am not familiar how the telephone works. The Bayantel cannot call a cell phone or things like that. Besides, I have not really met anyone personally. Our place was in Tandang Sora where traffic is horrendous.

I brought with me a cell phone which did not work. I felt so jurassic with people around texting, taking pictures and talking over a cell phone.

The Predictions

 Dear insansapinas,

It was reported that Noynoy Aquino is taking charge of his campaign. What happened to his media handlers?

After the "palpak" rapping add, he is still retaining his sister and Boy Abunda as in charge of the story line of his political ad.

These were my predictions in December 2009.

Let us see which among them had already happened.

POLITICS

1. The yellow army of Noynoy will go to the extent of giving the impression that Noynoy is Siyananga according to the message from the Blessed Virgin Mary.

2. The camps of Mar Roxas and Noynoy Aquino will have cold war as the election comes nearer.

3. One or two presidential candidates will withdraw or will not make it to the last stretch.

4. Money will become a problem of the Noynoy camp as contributions promised will not be met.

5. His percentage of winning will be reduced in the coming months when campaigns are more intensified and more think tanks are employed by the well-oiled political machinery.

You do not have to be a psychic to expect these developments.

At the rate he's losing his cool  in the way he deals with people who he sensed to be not his fan, he is going to make the undecided favor other candidates.

I hope it is not Jamby who declared that if she becomes president, she is going to run after her relatives.

Between Jamby and Juday, I would have voted for Juday. mweheheh

Short Shorts

Dear insansapinas,

Dinuguan

I am still in the different time zone. I am asleep the whole day, US East Coast time and awake the whole night. This is my second week in the US of A and if I were a vampire, I could have stalked a lot of people for their blood. Ngggiiii.

In the Philippines, I tried dinuguan in one of the popular fastfoods. It caused me diarrhea. Too much MSG or too much vinegar? That was my first and last attempt to eat dinuguan. I rather have the home-cooked Bicol dinuguan which has coconut milk and langka or the langka-like fruit.

The Texting Country

It had been more than five years that I have not gone home. My friends and former faculty staff visited me at home. We were in the middle of conversation reminiscing the good old days when simultaneously they brought out their cell phones to read the texts that they received.

The Bike

I am not used to seeing motor bikes in the main thoroughfare here in the United States so when one motobike with the whole family (walang crash helmet) zigzagged while we were cruising Commonwealth Avenue, para akong tangang sigaw ng sigaw. Oooh baka mabangga...things like that. Yong puso ko yata ay nahuhulog.

The Cross Dresser

Why does a popular comedian has to wear a lady's dress in his education-oriented TV series?

The Eyeglasses

I had a new prescription glass. I went back to the optical store because it is misaligned. Nahuhulog tuloy madalas. The person in the store told me that they can not guarantee that the temples would not break when they fix them. Kainis.

When I went to UP store where I bought shirts and other pasalubongs for my siblings, I saw a Sarabia Optical branch. I decided to have a new one made.

The owner was an English speaking lady.

The Size Matters

Dear insansapinas,

I did not know that there is a customer size policy  that  requires "passengers that cannot fit safely and comfortably in one seat to purchase an additional seat while traveling.
Los Angeles, California (CNN) -- Southwest Airlines apologized a second time Monday to film director Kevin Smith for pulling him off a Saturday flight because of his size.
"We're very sorry for how his night unfortunately played out," Southwest said in a written statement.
The airline said it "could have potentially handled our communication better," but defended "the determination that Mr. Smith needed more than one seat to complete his flight comfortably."

Do you know how big are these planes that fly domestic? They're just as wide as a big bus and the seats are cramped.

Kahit na sa international flights, you wish that the seat next to you is vacant so that you can pull up the armrest and occupy the two or three seats available.

TOINkkk.

Mystery Diagnosis

Dear insansapinas,

The doctor-wife of my former boss in the Philippines advised me to go ahead with the surgery. This was the same doctor who saved my co-faculty thousands of money for advising her not to undergo caesarian for her second baby. It was the general belief of so many that once a woman undergoes CS with the first baby, all others will be delivered in the same way.

Her first CS was not even necessary according to the doctor who is an OB-GYNE. She has ample space in her hips that even a 9 lb-baby can get out without the need for a forcep.

My reluctance for surgery was caused by the stupidity and ignorance of some doctors who gave hell to some people--my MIL included. She had a knee surgery which went wrong that she could not bend her right knee.

Mystery Diagnosis

As I was cooped up in the hotel with three HBO channels, I watched several TV series and reality shows, Project Runway included. Sus.

One of the most interesting features that I watched was Mystery Diagnosis where in that episode, the woman who was victim of a botched surgery of parotid gland experienced embarrassing moments when she started sweating saliva and masticating her food with her sweat. It was traced to misrewiring the sweat and salivary glands after the surgery that they swapped the orifices where they excrete the fluids.

Worse was the tumor that was suppposed to be extracted was never removed. Because of the distrust of the patient to the doctors, she decided to live with the  softball-sized tumor in her neck. She even named it.

After 15 years, they found a doctor who said that removal is possible but there are risks involved since arteries connected to the brain found its way inside the tumor.

Surgery was successful except that she lost her capability to swallow. Just like meds which cure some health issues but give you a lot more side effects that when taken as a whole is worse than the disease being treated.

The Boy who Can not Move His Bowel

I can relate with this when my tsikiting gubat was seven days old. Yes, seven days old. Instead of bowel however, he can not pass the urine. I saw that the tip of his organ was reddish. He would just cry when he tried to pee. A small amount of water would come out.

I brought him to several doctors, PGH included and the only diagnosis that I got was there was an infection. But of course, hindi ba naman makaihi. So I brought to the popular pedia and right there and then, she said that walang butas ang kaniyang. T-t. Naalala ko tuloy noong buntis ako and I kept on sewing while my clothes was on...sabi ng mother ko pagnanganak ako walang butas ang pwet ng bata. That was our superstition of course...and the butas is missing not from the pwet.

The doctor promptly performed a surgery to create a hole and to treat the infection of my seven-day old baby.

The baby in the story can not defecate for weeks and months, so much so that his stomach got big ang bloated.

The doctors consulted said that it is normal and they could not find any dysfunctionality. Another doctor subjected the two year-old baby to enema when the scan showed blockage in the intestines. No progress.

Until he became four year old and he started vomiting and getting sick with a big bloated stomach.

The pedia-surgeon subjected him to scan and biopsy of some skin of the GI. He found out that the boy is sick with a rare disease. The muscles of the colon do not contract to push the bowel to the anus.

The doctor performed a surgery to put a special device which will substitute a non-functional muscles of the colon. He was given a colostomy while his body was adjusting to the invasive surgery that was made on him.

It took them four years and several doctors before the right diagnosis was made.
