ACADEME

 Dear insansapinas,

Before I joined the academe, I just had resigned from a company where I was the chief accountant. After installing the accounting system, the president of the corporation (closed corporation) thought it was beneficial for them to give the position to his unemployed brother-in-law. As if it was not enough, he asked me to break- in the man who would not pass the CPA board exam several times. I left the company. walang mahabang sulat. tseh nila. Idinemanda ko ng wrongful termination, walang nangyari. Wala naman akong abugado.

I decided to try the academe thinking that in the institutions where professionals are expected to be morally upright there will be no intrigues, no discrimination and no corruption or fraud. I WAS WRONG.

So when I read this article from manila standard, even if the investigation has not yet been finished and the accused is still given the benefit of doubt, I can say that there are really  cases when the top position of a university is being given to those "favored ones".

The Ombudsman ordered CHED Chairman Emmanuel Angeles to enforce the order against Umar, whose case stemmed from a complaint filed by Sahajim H. Hassan, former president of the Tawi-tawi regional college.
Hassan accused Umar of asking for money with the promise to make him college president.
“The money was deposited to the accounts of Umar, her daughter Rihanned M. Umar, and a certain Romeo S. Alcala, all at the Land Bank of the Philippines. Sometime in 2006, respondent asked for and received the amount of P500,000 from the complainant coupled with the same promise of making the latter president of TRAC,” the complainant said.

Ganito yon.

Boss: Gear up, long drive tayo sa...(insert yong probinsiya).

Mabait raw ako. pag tulog at di naghihilik. Saka sabi niya malakas daw akong makaintimidate pag kasama ako. OO kaagad. Anong akala niya sa akin, bodyguard?

Pagdating sa university, sabi ni boss, pipray over daw kami noong presidente. Relihiyosa kasi.

Tseh. If I know, kailangan doon Christian, eh ako, saradong katoliko. Hindi nga lang nakasusi.

Manny Pangilinan 's Commencement Address at the Ateneo

 Dear insansapinas,

Update: There were 2 speeches pala.
One was delivered March 26 and the other one was in March 27.

Rowling at Oprah.

Ito ang     balita

Manuel V. Pangilinan, one of the country's most prominent businessmen, has admitted to "borrowing" from other graduation speeches for his commencement address to Ateneo graduates last month.

In a letter to Ateneo University president Ben Nebres that was published on the Ateneo web site Saturday night, Pangilinan said, “I wish to express my sincerest apology to you, the University and to the 2010 graduating class."

Reports of plagiarism in Pangilinan’s commencement address to the “Ateneo's Sesquicentennial Batch" last March 27 had been circulating on Facebook, comparing passages from his speech with commencement addresses by JK Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter novels, and to a lesser extent, Oprah Winfrey.

“I am told further that comments posted on Facebook have started to spill beyond graduation," Pangilinan wrote Nebres, “and are now alluding to my misconduct with respect to Meralco, with former President Erap, and so forth. Under the circumstances, it is best for the Ateneo and myself to shorten the life of this controversy and prevent it from spinning out of control."

Here is the full text of MVP’s inspiring Commencement Address at the Ateneo last Friday, 26 March.

COMMENCEMENT ADDRESS
SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT & SCHOOL OF SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING
ATENEO DE MANILA UNIVERSITY, QUEZON CITY
4:00 P.M., FRIDAY, 26TH MARCH 2010
SALUTATION

MAGANDANG HAPON SA INYONG LAHAT.
REVEREND FATHER NEBRES, DISTINGUISHED FACULTY AND STAFF, PROUD AND RELIEVED PARENTS, GRADUATES OF 2010 – WARMEST CONGRATULATIONS. I AM PLEASED TO JOIN THE FELLOWSHIP OF THIS SESQUICENTENNIAL CLASS.
INTRODUCTION
IT HAS BEEN MORE THAN 40 YEARS SINCE I GRADUATED FROM WHAT WAS A SMALL, IDYLLIC UNIVERSITY. WE WERE AN ALL MALE INSTITUTION THEN, WITH MARYKNOLL – NOW MIRIAM – PROVIDING SOME DISTRACTION. WE WORE NECKTIES, AND NO CELFONES OR JOLLIBEES WERE AROUND. SINCE THAT TIME, JESUIT CHARISM HAS PRODUCED MANY CHANGES AT THE ATENEO, MOST NOTABLY AN INCREASING ENGAGEMENT WITH THE WORLD – PUSHING THE FRONTIERS OF DEPTH AND UNIVERSALITY – TO USE THE WORDS OF FATHER ADOLFO NICOLAS. THIS IS CONSISTENT WITH THE UNIVERSITY’S STRATEGIC MISSION OF CLOSING THE GAPS IN POVERTY AND COMPETITIVENESS.
HONORIS CAUSA
MORE THAN 500 YEARS AGO – IN 1478 – THE FIRST RECORDED HONORARY DEGREE WAS CONFERRED BY OXFORD UNIVERSITY ON LIONEL WOODVILLE, WHO WAS DEAN OF EXETER UNIVERSITY AND BROTHER-IN-LAW OF KING EDWARD IV. OXFORD MADE HIM A DOCTOR OF CANON LAW IN A BLATANT ATTEMPT TO WIN THE FAVOUR OF THE KING.
THIS IS MY FOURTH DEGREE – SO FAR. I HEAR THAT OPRAH WINFREY – THE BIG “O” – HAS COLLECTED A TOTAL OF 7 AWARDS. SO I HAVE 3 TO GO!
THERE’S THE HEAVYWEIGHT BOXER MIKE TYSON WHO GOT A DOCTORATE IN HUMANE LETTERS FOR HIS WIDE RANGE OF SKILLS, INCLUDING BITING OFF THE EARS OF HIS OPPONENTS.
BUT THE INDISPUTABLE NUMBER ONE AWARDEE MUST BE SESAME STREET’S KERMIT THE FROG – WHO WAS GIVEN AN HONORARY DOCTORATE OF AMPHIBIOUS LETTERS BY LONG ISLAND UNIVERSITY!
QUO VADIS?
44 YEARS AGO I SAT WHERE YOU NOW SIT, I ALSO THOUGHT WHAT YOU NOW THINK – WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN TO ME? WHERE CAN I FIND A JOB? AM I REALLY GRADUATING A VIRGIN?
PERHAPS THE BEST WAY TO ANSWER THE FIRST TWO QUESTIONS – ONLY YOU CAN ANSWER THE THIRD – IS TO POINT AT THOSE SUNRISE BUSINESSES WHICH CAN BEST OFFER OPPORTUNITIES TO YOU FOR
EMPLOYMENT AND CAREER:
FIRST, BUSINESSES UNIQUE TO OUR COUNTRY’S GEOGRAPHIC OR RESOURCE ADVANTAGES SUCH AS TOURISM AND MINING.
SECOND, INDUSTRIES THAT ARE BY-PRODUCTS OF OUR LABOR MIGRATION, LEAVING US FOR EXAMPLE WITH A SURPLUS OF DOCTORS, NURSES, AND CARE GIVERS. AND SINCE OUR POPULATION IS COMPARATIVELY YOUNG – COMPLEMENTED BY OUR WARM DISPOSITION – WE ARE NATURALLY COMPETITIVE IN THE MEDICAL TOURISM AND RETIREMENT BUSINESSES.
THIRD, BUSINESSES LINKED TO INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY. THE SHIFT TO A KNOWLEDGE BASED ECONOMY IS BEST REFLECTED IN THE EMERGENCE OF THE COUNTRY’S KNOWLEDGE PROCESS AND BUSINESS PROCESS OUTSOURCING (KPO/BPO) MARKETS – TWO OF OUR FAST RISING INDUSTRIES. THIS SECTOR GENERATED 7 BILLION DOLLARS IN REVENUE IN 2009, AND IS EXPECTED TO REALIZE 17 BILLION DOLLARS FIVE YEARS FROM TODAY.
FOURTH, INFRASTRUCTURE AND UTILITIES. WE SIMPLY NEED TO BUILD MORE ROADS, PORTS AND HARBOR, POWER PLANTS, MODERN AIRPORTS, ESPECIALLY A NEW INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, AN EFFICIENT TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM – TRAINS, LIGHT RAIL, SHIPS – MODERN HOSPITALS TO RAISE THE LEVEL OF MEDICAL CARE.
FIFTH, AGRICULTURE. WE NEED TO FEED OUR PEOPLE FIRST. I DON’T UNDERSTAND AND CANNOT ACCEPT, WHY WE ARE THE WORLD’S BIGGEST IMPORTER OF RICE.
LIFE IN THE CORPORATION – TYPES OF BOSSES
AFTER SUGGESTING WHERE JOBS CAN BE FOUND, LET ME SAY THAT MOST OF YOU WILL PROBABLY WORK WITH A BOSS OR WITH MANY BOSSESS. SOME OF THEM WILL BE FIRST RATE AND INSPIRING, BUT SOME WILL MAKE YOU WONDER HOW THEY BECAME MANAGERS IN THE FIRST PLACE. OF THESE MANAGERS, FOUR TYPICAL TYPES STAND OUT:
FIRST, IS THE “DESPOTIC MANAGER” – WHO RULES AS IF BY DIVINE RIGHT, BECAUSE HE THINKS HE IS ALWAYS RIGHT. HE HAS A SHORT ATTENTION SPAN AND EXPECTS EVERYTHING TO BE DONE HIS WAY, RIGHT AWAY. FROM HIM YOU GET NOTHING BUT FEAR. SA PLDT, SILA YUNG TINATAWAG NAMING ARGENTINEAN O DI KAYA, RUSSIAN. KASI PALAGI URGENT YAN OR RUSH YAN!
SECOND, IS THE “FLOATER MANAGER” – ONE WHO RISES EFFORTLESSLY IN AN ORGANIZATION. HE IS FRIENDS WITH EVERYONE AND DOESN’T MAKE ENEMIES BECAUSE HE DOES NOT MAKE THE TOUGH DECISIONS. FROM HIM YOU WILL LEARN NOTHING.
THIRD, IS THE “INTRIGUER MANAGER”, THE CORPORATE RASPUTIN. HE OPERATES BELOW THE SURFACE AND PLOTS AGAINST EVERYBODY. FROM HIM YOU WILL GET PAINFUL ULCERS AND SLEEPLESS NIGHTS.
FOURTH, IS THE “NARCISSIST MANAGER”, WHOSE SELF-CONFIDENCE AND CHARM – SOMETIMES COMBINED WITH HANDSOME OR PRETTY LOOKS – PUSH HIM OR HER UP THE CORPORATE LADDER. FROM HIM YOU WOULD GET NO ENCOURAGEMENT.
HOW TO MANAGE YOUR BOSS
ON YOUR WAY TO THE TOP, HOW CAN YOU DEAL WITH A CORPORATE SPECIES CALLED THE BOSS?
FIRST, YOU MUST LEARN HOW TO MANAGE NOT ONLY YOUR PEERS SIDEWAYS, BUT ALSO YOUR BOSS UPWARDS.
SECOND, FIND THE GEM BENEATH THE ROUGH. REMEMBER YOUR BOSS WILL NOT BE FLAWED IN ALL ASPECTS. SHORT OF BEING THE S/O/B – SON OF THE BOSS – HE MUST HAVE HAD SOME STRENGTHS TO HAVE BECOME A MANEGER. YOU CAN HAVE A BOSS WITH A FIERY TEMPER, BUT MAYBE THEY WORK LIKE THERE’S NO CLOCK. THE TRICK IS TO KNOW WHAT MAKES HIM TICK.
THIRD, BE SMART, OR BETTER YET, SMARTER THAN THE BOSS.
FOURTH, CHOOSE YOUR BATTLES. NOT ALL DISAGREEMENTS WITH YOUR MANAGER WILL BE GOOD FOR YOU OR YOUR CAREER. SPEAK OUT AT THE OPPORTUNE TIME. THE GREEKS HAVE A TERM FOR THIS – IT IS CALLED “KAIROS” – WHICH IS TO SAY THE RIGHT THING AT THE RIGHT MOMENT. BE SENSITIVE.
THE CHALLENGES – ADOPT A CAUSE
WHEN I STARTED MY OWN CAREER, I WAS JUST LIKE YOU LOOKING FOR A JOB, ANY JOB. IN FACT, I BEGAN AS AN EMPLOYEE – AS EXECUTIVE ASSISTANT TO THE PRESIDENT OF FILOIL MARKETING WITH A SALARY OF 1,000 PESOS A MONTH. AND DESPITE MY WHARTON MBA, I HAD TO TRAIN AS A SALESMAN FOR 6 MONTHS WORKING IN MANY PARTS OF MINDANAO. IT TOOK PERSISTENCE AND PATIENCE AND YEARS OF WAITING UNTIL I FINALLY BECAME MY OWN BOSS. WAS I SCARED? YOU BET! TRANSITIONING FROM EMPLOYEE TO ENTREPRENEUR WAS LIKE STARTING ALL OVER AGAIN. IN 1981, I FOUNDED FIRST PACIFIC WITH 6 PEOPLE, 50 SQUARE METERS OF OFFICE SPACE, AND LITTLE CAPITAL. IT WAS LIKE THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL FOR ME, AND I COULDN’T CALL MY MOTHER TO HOLD MY HAND.
SO THE STRUGGLES I FACED TO MAKE IT TO THIS PODIUM TODAY REFLECT THE STRUGGLES OF SO MANY OTHER FILIPINOS BORN WITHOUT PRIVILEGE OR PEDIGREE.
I WAS BORN POOR. MY FATHER STARTED HIS CAREER AS A MESSENGER AT PHILIPPINE NATIONAL BANK. HIS FATHER BEGAN HIS – AS A PUBLIC SCHOOL TEACHER IN APALIT, PAMPANGA. AS A YOUNG STUDENT, I LIVED ON A 25-CENTAVO DAILY ALLOWANCE. SCHOLARSHIPS SUSTAINED MY EDUCATION FROM MY ELEMENTARY DAYS AT SAN BEDA COLLEGE ALL THE WAY TO MY MBA AT THE WHARTON SCHOOL, UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA.
I GREW UP IN LITTLE BAGUIO, SAN JUAN – ALONG BARASOAIN STREET. OUR MODEST HOUSE STOOD RIGHT ON THE BOUNDARY OF A SQUATTER SETTLEMENT. FROM MY BEDROOM WINDOW, I COULD SEE, SMELL, AND FEEL THE LIVES OF THE POOR FIRSTHAND – MGA AWAY NG MAG-ASAWA AT NG KANILANG MGA KABIT HALOS ARAW-ARAW, MGA TAONG NALILIGO SA MAY KANTO, MGA BATANG DUMARAMING PARANG KABUTE KADA TAON.
SO WHENEVER I LOOK BACK ON MY YEARS HERE AT THE ATENEO – I DO HAVE ONE LASTING MEMORY, AND THAT’S ABOUT THE POOR, AND ABOUT HELPING THEM – ON SATURDAYS WHEN I WOULD TEACH CATECHISM AT THE NATIONAL MENTAL HOSPITAL IN MANDALUYONG, AND SUNDAYS AMONGST SQUATTER FAMILIES IN SAPANG PALAY.
AND MY INTEREST IN SPORTS HAS EMPHATICALLY PROVEN HOW BASKETBALL OR BOXING OR CYCLING PROVIDES AN ESCAPE FROM THE POVERTY TRAP. LOOK NO FURTHER THAN MANNY PACQUIAO AS AN EXAMPLE. AND THERE ARE OTHER EQUALLY INSPIRING SUCCESS STORIES.
JOEL CALDERON WAS LAST YEAR’S PADYAK PINOY TOUR OF CHAMPIONS. HE IS A TRICYCLE DRIVER IN GUIMBA, NUEVA ECIJA WHO HAD TO LEAVE HIS JOB TO TRAIN FOR THIS SUMMER BIKATHON. JOEL WON, RIDING AN OLD MODEL BICYCLE BORROWED FROM HIS TEENAGE NEPHEW. HIS PROUD FATHER TRUNDLED HIS TRICYCLE FROM GUIMBA TO BAGUIO, 120 KILOMETERS DISTANT, TO WITNESS HIS SON’S GLORIOUS MOMENT – FINISHING THE 195-KILOMETER RACE IN 5 HOURS, 58 MINUTES, 37 SECONDS.
ANNIE ALBANIA IS A MEMBER OF OUR NATIONAL WOMEN’S BOXING TEAM. SHE COMES FROM POBLACION, SOUTH COTABATO. AND IS THE YOUNGEST OF SIX CHILDREN. HER FATHER WAS A PALAY FARMER WHO TILLED THE FAMILY’S ANCESTRAL LAND OF 2 HECTARES TO PUT FOOD IN THE MOUTHS OF HIS CHILDREN. ANNIE’S FATHER DIED SIX YEARS AGO, LEAVING THE TASK OF BREAD WINNING TO ANNIE. IT WAS IN THE SPORT OF BOXING THAT SHE CAST HER LOT. WITH DETERMINATION AND DILIGENCE, ANNIE IS NOW THE COUNTRY’S BEST LADY BOXER. AND SHE WILL STEP ONTO THE BIGGEST STAGE OF HER LIFE – THE LONDON OLYMPICS IN 2012 – HOPEFULLY WITH THE COUNTRY’S FIRST OLYMPIC GOLD.
SO GRADUATES, FOR THE JOEL’S AND ANNIE’S OF THIS COUNTRY – TAKE UP A CAUSE. LET YOUR PASSION GIVE FORCE AND MOMENT TO THAT CAUSE. BE BRAVE ENOUGH TO LIVE LIFE PASSIONATELY. YOU HAVE TO LEAVE THE CITY OF YOUR COMFORT AND GO INTO THE WILDERNESS OF YOUR PASSION.
AND IF YOU MAKE YOUR CAUSE THE FOCUS OF YOUR CAREER, THAT WOULD BE GREAT. BUT EVEN IF YOU SPEND A FEW HOURS EACH WEEK, A FEW DAYS EACH MONTH, YOU COULD STILL CHANGE LIVES. EVEN THE LIFE OF ONE, SINGLE PERSON. FEW WILL HAVE THE RESOURCES TO BEND HISTORY ITSELF. BUT EACH OF YOU CAN WORK TO CHANGE A SMALL CORNER OF THIS COUNTRY OF OURS FOR THE BETTER. IT IS IN THE TOTAL OF YOUR INDIVIDUAL ACTS THAT WILL BE WRITTEN THE HISTORY OF THIS GENERATION.
CONCLUSION
I’D LIKE TO CLOSE NOW BY SAYING THAT TO BE TRULY SUCCESSFUL, YOU HAVE TO STAND FOR SOMETHING LARGER THAN YOURSELF, TO USE YOUR LIFE IN SERVICE TO SOMEONE ELSE’S. BEYOND YOUR IMMEDIATE CONCERN ABOUT JOBS AND CAREER, THERE IS THE BROADER IMPERATIVE OF NATION BUILDING – ONE OF THE 3 THEMES OF ATENEO’S SESQUI.
THE NOTION OF NATION BUILDING WAS BEST CAPTURED BY INDIA’S FIRST PRIME MINISTER NEHRU WHEN HE SAID, ON THE EVE OF INDIAN INDEPENDENCE IN AUGUST 1947: “THE SERVICE OF INDIA MEANS THE SERVICE OF THE MILLIONS WHO SUFFER. IT MEANS ENDING POVERTY AND IGNORANCE AND DISEASE AND INEQUALITY OF OPPORTUNITY.” AND THEN REFERRING TO MAHATMA GANDHI, NEHRU ADDED: “THE AMBITION OF THE GREATEST MAN OF OUR GENERATION HAS BEEN TO WIPE EVERY TEAR FROM EVERY EYE. THAT MAY BE BEYOND US, BUT AS LONG AS THERE ARE TEARS AND SUFFERING, OUR WORK WILL NOT BE OVER.”
WHILST OUR WORK IN THIS COUNTRY IS INDEED FAR FROM OVER, MAY EVERYONE ON THIS OCCASION RESOLVE TO WIPE EVERY TEAR – IN EVERY EYE – OF EVERY FILIPINO.
FINALLY, LET ME LEAVE YOU WITH THE WISDOM OF MY FELLOW DOCTORATE, KERMIT THE FROG, IN HIS OWN COMMENCEMENT ADDRESS – “YOU ARE NO LONGER TADPOLES. THE TIME HAS COME FOR YOU TO DROP YOUR TAILS AND LEAVE THIS SWAMP. BUT I’M SURE THAT WHEREVER I GO AS I TRAVEL AROUND THE WORLD, I WILL FIND EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU WORKING YOUR TAILS OFF TO SAVE OTHER SWAMPS”.
AGAIN, MANY CONGRATULATIONS. GOD BLESS ALL OF YOU. GOOD LUCK AND GOOD LIFE.
- Manny V. Pangilinan (MVP)

Here is the other speech.

School of Humanities & School of Social Sciences
Ateneo de Manila, Quezon City
4:00 p.m., Saturday, 27th March 2010

Magandang hapon sa inyong lahat. I want to thank Father Ben and the Ateneo community for the honor of this doctorate degree. And congratulations to our Law School for having 7 of the 11 – ten topnotchers – in the recent bar exams!
Father Nebres, Father Magadia, trustees, faculty and staff, parents and siblings, graduates of 2010 – many congratulations. Thank you so much for this gift of fellowship with the sesquicentennial class. You‘ve earned your diploma from a great learning institution, and you have every right to be proud. I have wracked my mind and heart with what I should say today. The weeks of fear and worry at the thought of giving this commencement address have made me lose weight, and sleep. And I‘ve asked myself, what I wish I had known at my own graduation day 44 years ago.
The sad truth is that I don‘t even remember who the speaker was at my graduation, or a single word that was said. So I begin these remarks with the expectation that I will soon be forgotten. I‘ve been cautioned that on an occasion as this, graduates are only thinking one of the following thoughts: one – I hope these ceremonies finish soon because I can‘t wait to take my vacation. Two – inspire me please. There aren‘t too many doing that these days. Three – If MVP stops talking before I stop listening, I‘ll give him a big applause. Four –If you hand out free tickets to the Justin Timberlake concert tonight, we‘d give you a standing ovation. Yes, I’m happy to say that Smart will be giving away four free tickets right after this ceremony! Now that you‘ve been sufficiently humored and bribed, let me earn my honorary degree, and turn thoughtful and traditional. More to do, more to achieve I come here today with the thought that despite what may seem to be the culmination of a successful life with this honorary degree, there‘s still much to do. I come to say that one‘s title, even an honor like this, says little about how well one‘s life has been led –that no matter how much you‘ve done, or how successful you‘ve been, there‘s always more to learn, more to do, more to accomplish. So I want to say to all of you, that despite your remarkable achievement, you too cannot rest on your laurels.
Some graduating classes in the past have marched into this place in times of peace and progress. In those easy times, we could have called on you to keep things merely going, and not screw things up. But we‘re gathered here at a time of trial and transition, not only for this country but also for the world. Our economy slowed down last year because of a global recession – the result, in part, of greed and irresponsibility that rippled out from Wall Street. We continue to spend beyond our means. We avoid making the tough, unpopular choices. And in 44 days, we will elect a new set of national and local leaders. For all of you, these challenges are felt now in more immediate and personal terms. You will soon be looking for a job – struggling to figure out which career makes sense in this economy of ours. Maybe you have loans, and are worried how you‘ll pay them down. Maybe you‘ve got a family to help. Maybe you‘re asking how your siblings can have an Ateneo education like you had. Against these issues, you may be tempted to fall back on the more visible markers of success — by chasing the usual brass rings. How much money you make, a fancy title or a nice car. Being on the roster of the ―rich and famous (or the ―most invited) guest list. But the choice of form over substance, fame over character, short-term gain over long-term goal is precisely what your generation needs to end.
Defining success
Coming from the Ateneo, I know that the pressure to succeed is immense. In fact, your biggest liability is the need to succeed. And your biggest fear must be the fear of failure. But first, let me define what success is. Let me tell you, money‘s pretty cool. I‘m not going to stand here and tell you that‘s it‘s not about money, because money is sweet. I like money. It‘s good for buying companies and things – and for putting up a few buildings here and there for Ateneo. But having a lot of money does not totally make you a successful person. What you want is both money and meaning. You want your life and your career to be meaningful. Because meaning is what brings real richness to your life, to be surrounded by people you can truly work with – because you trust and treasure them, and they cherish you in return. That‘s when you‘re really rich, that‘s when you really succeed.
Fear of failure
Let me now deal with failure. On this wonderful day when you stand on the threshold of what is called ―real life, it is – ironically – the best time to talk about failure. Nobody‘s life is seamless or smooth. We all stumble. We all have setbacks. If things go wrong, you hit a dead end – as you will, many times in your life – it‘s just life‘s way of saying – time to change course. Now I cannot tell you that failure is fun. Periods of failure in my life were dark ones. I‘ve had a lot of success. But I‘ve had a lot of failures. I‘ve looked good. I‘ve looked bad. I‘ve been praised and criticized. And it hurt like hell. But my mistakes have been necessary. I had no idea how far the tunnel of failure extended. And any light at the end of it seemed more hope than reality.
Now let me tell you about some of my biggest failures.
In 1995, first pacific invested in telecommunications in India at a time when the industry there was just getting started. Under the laws of India, foreign investors are allowed to own not more than 49% of a local telco. So we invited an Indian partner to hold the 51% majority. You all know how capital intensive the telco business is. To our utmost regret, our partner could not provide the counterpart capital. The relationship soured, and we had to sell the business. Since then, India‘s telecoms industry has grown exponentially. So we lost significant value by divesting. If we had managed to retain this business, I would not need to make a living giving graduation speeches. But I have had personal failures as well.
I will now let you in on a well-kept secret. I was in 4th year high school in San Beda College, and was in contention to be valedictorian that year. It was an open secret that majority of my classmates were cheating –changing answers from true to false, ironically, in our religion exams. I felt I had to do the same to protect my grades. Several of us were caught – pero ako ang pinag-initan. I knew I was wrong, and deserved to be punished. Indeed, San Beda stripped me of all my honors. Finally, with the suspicion about rampant cheating, I was asked by the principal to name names. I refused. I disappointed my parents deeply. It took many years for the pain and bitterness to heal. Several years ago, I thought it was time to free myself from the rancor and memory of that experience. What better proof of reconciliation with San Beda than the 3 NCAA championships for the Red Lions?
Failure taught me lessons about myself that I could have learned no other way. I discovered that I had a strong will, and more discipline than I had imagined: I also found out that I had parents whose value was truly priceless. The knowledge that you have emerged wiser and stronger from setbacks means that you can be secure in your ability to survive. You will never truly know yourself, or the strength of your relationships, until both have been tested by adversity. And so rock bottom became the solid foundation on which I rebuilt my life, my career and, most importantly, my moral values. So graduates, always remember this – success is never final. Failure is never fatal. It is courage that counts. MVP‘s lessons for life as I come near the end of my remarks, let me wrap up with some old-fashioned, feel-good graduation advice:
First, hug and kiss those who helped get you to this day – parents, grandparents, friends, teachers. If you’re too shy or uptight to do that, please do the old fashioned handshake thing. But I recommend a hug and a kiss. Don’t let the sun go down today without saying thank you to someone.
Second, don’t forget that you have a body under your toga. Take good care of it. Engage in sports. It‘s fun, and it is a laboratory for victory and adversity. How an athlete celebrates his triumphs, or overcomes defeat or injury, how he deals with a hostile crowd or a critical media, reflects what life is all about. Indeed, sports offers a richness all its own – it is a metaphor for life.
Third, remember you have brains under that mortarboard. You‘ve been running it like crazy for four years, whining about all the books you’ve had to read, the papers you’ve had to write, the tests you’ve had to take. Yet thanks to that versatile, gigabyte hard-drive of yours, and a million Starbucks cups, you made it today.
Fourth, give one peso for every ten you earn. I saw my mother pass away 8 years ago, and she left this world without anything. Which means you’re not the owner of what you think you own – you’re only a steward, because everything‘s on loan. So pass some of it on. If you don’t, government will just take it anyway.
Conclusion
As today‘s door closes softly between us, those are my parting words. But there will be other partings and other last words in your lives. But today will not be complete without acknowledging what Father Ben has done for the Ateneo these past 17 years as the university‘s longest serving president – the new Loyola Schools, all the new buildings, the UAAP championships and the bonfires. It has been a pleasure working with him. Thank you so much Father Ben.
I do have one last word for you, if I may. This was a gift when I graduated at the age of 19 – the gift of friends with whom I sat on graduation day, who remain my friends for life. So today, I wish you nothing better than similar friendships. And tomorrow, I hope that even if you remember not a single word of mine, you will recall those of Seneca, one of the old Romans i met in search of ancient wisdom: ―as is a tale, so is life: not how long it is, but how good it is, is what matters. I will now let you go. Through God‘s providence, may each of you travel well that precious journey called life. And may your future be worthy of your dreams. My deepest thanks for the courtesy and honor you all have shared with me. Many congratulations. God bless you all. Good day and good life.

Decision, decision, decision

Dear insansapinas,
Three of my friends were wondering why I don't return calls. I can't. I am at the point where I have to make a decision whether I will continue the book project or not.

One friend asked me  if I am   doing it for the money. Hindi ako plastic pero hindi na. (Kapanipaniwala ba? Who doesn't need money? )

The stress that I get in pushing myself to write;  reading reference materials and solving problems and cases I have prepared for illustrations and assignments can not be compensated by the streams of revenue expected since I am not publishing and marketing it myself like what I did in my previous instructional materials.Mahina lang ang kita. Prestige na lang ang habol. mwehehe

Some do not even believe about the book project.

Like what I had written before, I borrowed materials from the library and bought books for the latest edition about the topic-- Financial Management.

This is the calculator that I bought.

E-mail nga yong nagcommission sa aking gumawa ng libro," how am I doing". Sabi ko okay lang. Kailangan niya at least 500 pages.

May fulfiiment baga. Iba feeling.

Grief

Dear insansapinas,

When I came back from vacation, I know I was suffering from grief. Unlike those people who  deny what they feel and deceive themselves that everything is alright, I do recognize and deal with it. I slept a lot. (oops).  I just wrote that my oversleeping was due to anxiety of not being able to start my book project.  Lately, however, I realized, it is not the cause; not even the cough syrup that I am taking for my cough. I know that when I sit down to work, the ideas just flow naturally. Naah. I decided to slowdown (that is the carpet is now littered again with books and materials that I need as I watch TV while formulating accounting problems).

It is grief. This must be the same feeling described to me by my deceased mother-in-law who before her death intimated to me her fear--knowing her friends were dying and her loved ones getting sick, she felt alone in this world that two weeks after I moved to LA temporarily, she died.  But my MIL was in her 80's at that time and so were her contemporaries. My friends and colleagues were young. Hardly in their 50's except for one who already retired.

I wrote before that I found out that four of my former faculty members passed away. They were not only my staff, they were my friends as well. I forgot to cry at that time I heard the  bad news. And I realized I am still nursing their loss when I arrived back from the Philippines. Let me cry for them.

One of them was my assistant who worked very hard that I feared he would have a heart ailment. He was so dedicated in his job that he did not miss one working day. He was so responsible that he would stay in the office late in the nights just  to finish class schedules and assignments of faculty members. Seventy per cent of my work hours as Dean was spent on unnecessary meetings to feed the big ego of some senior professors who literally dot your "i"s and cross your "t's" as they critiqued the curricular programs which were outside their specializations.

My assistant was gay who never came out of  the closet. God knows how he struggled to become "straight". He married and had  three children. The eldest  became my goddaughter. He did everything to provide for his family.  Aside from teaching, he took in boarders in their apartment and later in the house that he bought. He died of aniurysm while he was vacationing in  Baguio together with his wife and children.

He visited me in San Francisco twice when he toured with his wife in Canada and US. I knew then that he was disappointed to have been by-passed in the promotion. He was originally assigned in the College by the university administration as their eyes and ears to "this" renegade dean. Later,I won him on my side.

The other faculty who died was a businessman and a practising CPA. He was also a very competent member of the staff who used his own money to help the students in their university activities. He was robbed and killed in his office. That time, he was estranged from his wife and lived alone by himself. I knew the story about his failed marriage. That was how I was close to my friends and colleagues in the corporate and academe. Nakikipag-inuman ng diet coke after office hour while they poured their hearts out.

The third died of loneliness and depression. His wife of many years got an alzheimer's and he was pressured to retire by an envious new head of the department.

The fourth died due to complications of diabetes. She was only in her early 40's.

A relative by affinity also died of complications of diabetes days before I left the US.

But then there is another grief  that I am suffering from. Grief is not only an emotional response to a loss because of death. It has also social and psychological dimension associated with loss of bonding to a person close to him/her.

I hate being frank because I know I can hurt other peoples' feelings. But I prefer to be the villain to correct what I sensed is wrong. I have been critical of people who treat their over 21year old children as kids. So when they mentioned kids, I cringed. Anong bata ang pinagsasabi mo? I also disliked parents who spoil their children, overprotect them and shield them from criticisms.

These will be the individuals who will succumb to nervous breakdown at the first sign of trouble. These will be the individuals who can not take criticisms because they were used to being defended of their wrongdoing when they were young..

These are the individuals who need affirmation, constant encouragement and applause for the little things they have done which are mostly for themselves. These are the individuals who became selfish and think nothing but themselves as the center of the universe. They can not  take rejection that they woud resort to everything from tantrums to feigning that they're sick just to get the attention of people ignoring them.  They become destructive both to himself/herself and people who became victim of their unhealthy ego.

These are the people who will always find excuses for their actions but would not reflect on whether their actions hurt other people too.

I grieve for the parents and the children.

Laptops Banned Inside the Classrooms

 Dear insansapinas,

How do you feel when you are lecturing and the students are nor listening because they are checking their e-mails, twittering to their friends or watching Youtube videos or playing online games in their  laptops?

Professor David Cole simply can not take it so he banned the lap tops in the lecture room.

On a windy morning in downtown Washington, a hundred Georgetown Law students gathered in a hall for David Cole's lecture on democracy and coercion. The desks were cluttered with books, Thermoses and half-eaten muffins.
Another item was noticeable in its absence: laptop computers. They were packed away under chairs, tucked into backpacks, powered down and forgotten.
Cole has banned laptops from his classes, compelling students to take notes the way their parents did: on paper.
If I were in the shoes of Professor Cole, I would do the same. (Pero malaki siguro ang sapatos niya). It is already insulting when students take you for granted while you are lecturing. The only reason why they come is for the attendance or else they will be dropped from the roll.

My friend who is teaching Accounting laments that the students nowadays can hardly add  two digit numbers without using a calculator. They're so dependent on this gadget that they have a mental block whn you asked them two plus twelve. Me, I use my abacus. mwehehe.

There are also professors or high school teachers who do not care. Our Science teacher in high school did not mind my classmates playing chess while the rest of us were trying to perfect our experiment.

There was an Accounting professor in the university where I taught in the evening classes who continued discussing the problems facing the board while the students were busy doing their thing.

In the doctorate program, we had a professor who the moment his back touched the chair, he felt into deep slumber. My naughty classmate--a Vice President of a bank would toss a coin near his chair. If he did not move, it means he was really asleep. My male classmates would leave especially when there were basketball games to watch.  The reporting group remained in the class.

I pity the old professor who would wake up before the class ended and found us ladies waiting for his dismissal.

Did my students sleep in my class? Naah. I told them whoever is found sleeping would wake up like an Indian...with white chalks on their faces. Of course, I was kidding. I had multi-colored chalks in my tote bag.

Book Deals

Dear insansapinas,
One of the people I had communicated with during my vacation was my former boss in the consultancy firm which sent me to seminars as speaker in finance and accounting. She is still very active in the academe and accounting education that she is tasked of writing instructional materials for finance, management and accounting.

Knowing that I published mine before I left the Philippines, she offered me  to co-author with her--that is I will do the writing of the texts and she does the editing and the inclusion of cases and problems  in the local scenario.

But wait, there is a time frame-- to finish the draft before April for two books. Hello!!!

Rewind:

When I came up with my first book, manual and practise set, it took me five years to finish . For five years, I brought with me that fat, ugly brown collapsible folder wherever I go even though I was not doing any writing. It became my security blanket. I slept with it near my pillows. It was in my car even when I was just doing some shopping.

Then I lost it. It took me months to rewrite it. The advantage of writing it by myself was that it was all stored in my mind. The information just flow like water without let-up. But then, I have to focus. So focused that when you meet me at the hallway, I may greet you but remind me later of the meeting and I may have no memory of it at all.

When the book was released and marketed, I bought my second car.

Business plan:

It also happened to me when I was preparing the business plan for the school that I helped put up in California.

Fast Forward:

Para sa book project, I started borrowing materials from the library. I am used to reading while lying down.

And I thought, I am going to enjoy my early retirement? Pagbukas ko ng first page ng libro na aking first reference, umatake ang aking ulcer. Aray. Stress na naman.

I have up to March to think. That would be a few days from now. UHmmmm.

There are no perfect friends but there are perfect friendships

Dear insansapinas,
Just received a call from my past life. She was a co-faculty in the university. In fact she was the one who came to the hospital ( I was confined then) to tell me the news that I got promoted as the Dean. They "strong-armed" the administration to kick my predecessor who was a little tyrannical and an academic entrepreneur with the students as his captive market. He was also the one who kicked me out from my airconditioned office as Asst. Dean and made me occupy a sardine-like cubicle outside his office. Ginawa akong secretary niya. Tcch.

She asked me if I am going back to the academe in case I go home to the Philippines.I enjoy teaching but it is the long faculty meetings that I detest. And also the faculty politics. Yes Virginia, I started teaching when I was in my early twenties, rose from the lowest faculty rank which means I was expected to kiss ass to senior multi-degreed faculty which eyebrows were consistently raised when their recommended course syllabi or course offerings were questioned by the young members of the faculty. Mga tsuplado.

A few years after finishing my post grad and earning credits for my extracurricular activities related to my profession, I became eligible for the position. But then politics intervened. A protegee of one executive got the position. He was not welcomed in the community.

I got no problem when I handled the position. I limited the meetings to a few times only and most of the time the food was on me.

Even before I rose to the position, I know the faculty members. Halos sabay-sabay kaming nagsimula. Lima sa kanila ay doon na nagsipag-asawa. Sama-sama kaming magshopping at manood ng sine. Ang mga boys ang aming driver. I knew their strengths and weaknesses We shared and solve personal and family problems together.

Pagkatapos naming mag-usap, may naamoy ako. Niluluto kong long grain rice ay nasunog. Di ko niluto sa rice cooker. Maliit kasi.

Cell Phones for Cheating

Dear insansapinas,

35 percent of US teens use cell phones to cheat
REUTERS – Common Sense Media recently released the results of a national poll on the use of digital media for cheating in school.
The poll, conducted by The Benenson Strategy Group, revealed that more than 35 percent of teens admit to cheating with cell phones, and more than half admit to using the Internet to cheat.
More importantly, many students don’t consider their actions to be cheating at all. The results highlight a real need for parents, educators, and leaders to start a national discussion on digital ethics.
“The results of this poll should be a wake-up call for educators and parents,” said James Steyer, CEO and founder of Common Sense Media.

So imbestiga ako. Ala Sherlock Homes, my dear Watson.

Toinkkk.

David Letterman and Sex in the Workplace Part 4

 Dear insansapinas,

Kagaya nito.

In 2005, to take one high-profile example, Harry Stonecipher was asked to resign from his post as chief executive officer of Boeing Co. when his extramarital affair with another executive at the company was exposed.
In the case of Sen. John Ensign, R-Nev., the damage is still unfolding from an affair he had with a member of his campaign staff (who also was the wife of a close aide) that was disclosed in June.

All expenses paid ni Ms. Businesswoman. Sarap naman,

Minsan niyaya niya akong magdinner.

Seminars and Classes

Dear insansapinas,

A friend from SF who is now in the Philippines on vacation called. His number in California appeared in the caller id.I thought he's back. He's calling from Buendia Makati where he rented a condo for his month's vacation. He's using his VOIP- or -whatever- it- is- phone connection. So he was not worrying about long distance charges. Isn't that wonderful? He's sick for a week now after he got wet during the heavy rain. Isn't that disgusting?

He's pissed. When he called the Technological Resource Center (TRC), he was advised to call again if the seminar that he is intending to attend is going to push thru. I forgot to tell him that it is the way it is for seminars. They have to meet a minimum number of participants or attendees before the seminar is given a go signal. Some sort of break-even.

The same is true for classes in the universities except for some state or city universities where students are required to enroll in subjects for the courses they have signed in when they passed the College admission tests.

During my salad days in the academe ( with some pasta as side order, mwehehe) I also moonlighted in exclusive and private universities where classes are confirmed finalized weeks after enrollment. Either the students and lecturers alike wait for the minimum number of enrollees for subjects-that-are-avoided-by-some-students-but-are-a requirement-for graduation or for classes which are overflowing with students because the professor/lecturer assigned to handle the class is
a very charitable person when it comes to grades that even though you can not add one plus one, you're given an A. Quid pro quo. Somethin' for somethin' and the something is not cheap, mind you. I am not saying that many in the noble profession of teaching make "bribery" their cottage industry. QED (quod erat domenstrandum). Halata bang yabang beauty ako for using Latin words? Blame my brother for borrowing a book that will put Latin in your life. *sips coffee*

Reminisce your college days when you have to look for subjects/classes to enroll in. ( I was in a block system when I was in College so all I did was to choose the block).

In a big university where I earned extra bucks to buy my dream house, the Accounting classes especially for first year and sophomore are "blockbusters". All Business students are required to take up the Basic Accounting Courses...Accounting 101, Fundamentals of Accounting and Accounting 102, Partnership and Corporate Accounting. However there was also a maximum number of students per class...about 60 to 70.

Smart lecturers/professors would put some extra classcards from their other classes so that the college is going to split the classes into two. He's lucky if the students enrolled are willing to change their schedules...if not all the lecturer had was a smaller class. The other class would be assigned to another professor...usually an associate...quid pro quo. Next semester, the associate may return the favor. No crime committed. No lies. Just "tweaking" the number of students. Who would like to handle a big Accounting class?

Me, I didn't do it. Students did not want to enroll in my class. I was a bitch. I make them stand up if they can not answer my question. So when students learn that I am the professor of the class, those who had already enrolled request for a transfer. In a class, there were those who could not drop or transfer because of schedule's constraints. Most of my students were matured already. Either they were into career change, like a student who was a pilot but was intending to migrate to the US or a housewife who's bored in their family business. They're not in the class for grades. They're there to learn. As long as I have the minimum number of students, my class was never phased out.

At the end of the semester, my students became my friends.

Ow in the government university where I taught, there was no such hassle. The classes are small and the students have to keep a certain grade requirement and number of units to enroll in every semester so classes are not dissolved for lack of enrolees. Otherwise, they get kicked out.

Paano Mo Malalaman na may Kulang na Turnilyo ang Taong Kakilala Mo?

Dear insansapinas,

Salawikain tagpi-tagpi for the day

Taong masalita, kulang sa gawa.

Taong masalita, MADALDAL.
*heh*

Walang makabahagi.

Teka, bibilangin ko muna itong buhok ko. Baka nabawasan ng nagsuklay ako, BWAHAHA.

The Suicidal -Pinay Reminisces-Part 2

Dear insansapinas,

Minsan may nahalata akong pagbabago niya.

May pinasisikatan siguro.

Kailangan lang raw kausapin ako dahil they look up to me.

Beh.

Ang iyong pinsan,

The Suicidal -Pinay Reminisces-Part 1

Dear insansapinas,

But that's me. BOW.

Hige.

Interview ang aking kaibigan. Tawanan sila ng dean. Tanggap siya. Interview ako ng dean, hindi ako tanggap. Wala raw akong kabuhay-buhay. The NERVE.

If I know, pinopromote niya ang kanilang MBA.hehehe

Pinagpustahanan pa nga ako ng mga kabarangay ko sa Graduate Faculty kung ako raw ay she or he or she/he. Ang mga hibang.

Itutuloy ko insan.

Ang iyong pinsan,

The Loner, the Lonely, the Depressed Students-Pinay Reminisces

Dear insansapinas,

Nakakahinayang. Susunod na kuwento ang suicidal na istudyante.

What I did for love

Dear insansapinas,

heart-cathcath2.blogspot.com

Love defies age, profession and race ikanga.

little miss sunshine
Isang babae at isang lalaki.

Yon munang lalaki. Tahimik siya. Hindi siya sociable. Wala siyang masyadong kaibigan. Pero dumadating siya pag may meeting.

Minsan hindi siya dumating. Nasa ospital daw.
