Visita Iglesia online

Dear insansapinas,
Quiapo
Visita Iglesia was already a tradition among my friends and I during Holy Weel when I was still in the Philippines .
 Manila Cathedral

Here in the United States where there are not so many Catholic Churches in a city or county, it is difficult to visit churches during Holy Week.
Baclaran
Even in the Philippnes, you need a car to visit at least seven churches or if you are a group, you can take the public utility.
Binondo
The Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines is making visita iglesia easier and convenient. They are offering Visita Iglesia online

Super Squirrel

Dear insansapinas,

I see them everyday running around the ground, climbing the trees, munching little acorns and hiding behind the trunks of trees when you get by. Sometimes there are two of them ogling at you as if they are making "tsismis" if you're buying your clothes in second hand stores, in Walmart or in Macy's. Salbaheng.

This one is different. It wants to be an action star.

CENSUS 2010 AND SCAM

Dear insansapinas,

photocredit:MSNBC

It's census year here in the US of A. First we received a letter about the census indicating that forms would be sent shortly which come  with translations to different languages except Filipino. Thank you. That saved Uncle Sam some millions for the forms alone.

A week after, we received the form.  It is more simple than the census ten years ago where I also participated by sending back the form as soon as  finished it. The following week a postcard type of reminder was mailed to the respondents.

So what's the problen? The biggest problem is that there are so many co-artists who take advantage of the census.

For con artists and swindlers the 2010 Census is a golden opportunity for mischief. With forms going out to every household in the country, the pool of potential victims is huge.

Ito kung paano kayo maloloko.
1. Fraudulent e-mail
The Census Bureau will not send out any electronic correspondence dealing with the 2010 census. Any e-mail claiming to be related to the current census is bogus, most likely a phishing scam designed to steal personal financial information
Send kaagad sa spam o idelete agad.

2. Fake survey forms
If you receive something in the mail supposedly from the Census Bureau and it asks you questions such as financial information, passwords, Social Security numbers, anything like that — it is not legitimate,”
May sarili rin silang survey forms. Nakakaloka talaga.
.
Impostor census takers
Census workers will not make home visits until May 1. And then they will only go to homes where the census form has not been returned.

May kumatok na sa amin noon 10 years ago. Kumakain ako. May nakapangal na chicken sa aking bibig.

Me: Yes?
Census: We're here to...
Me: Oh I mhailled alllreeeedy the folm.
Census: What?
Me: (thought balloon) Darating kasi pag kumakain ka eh. Ngayon hindi ako maintindihan. I mailed already the form.Intiendes?
Census: But we have additional questions.

Me: Sorry, I am eating and I am in a hurry.
Census: it will take only a few minutes.
Me: I already answered all questions. Good day. Blam.

Biglang balik ng drumstick sa bunganga.

EARTH HOUR

 Dear insansapinas,

Today is Saturday, March 27. I am participating in the Earth hour.

According to pareng Wiki:

Earth Hour is a global event organized by WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature, also known as World Wildlife Fund) and is held on the last Saturday of March annually, asking households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights and other electrical appliances for one hour to raise awareness towards the need to take action on climate change.

I am not cooking today.  OOps nasa slow cooker na pala. I am not using the light in the hallway. Kahit na ako magkabunggo-bunggo. I am planning to use a candle while tpying tihs bolg but I can not see the key pad.s Whew.

So I turned off the TV. Yeheeey. anyway it is weekend and there are no marathon reruns of  NCIS and  Law and Order. Sa weekdays naman.

who turned off the lights?

Whisperers

Dear insansapinas,

One of my favorite TV series is GHOST WHISPERER. The ghosts are the whisperers to the supposed  psychic, Jennifer Love Hewitt.

But there are also other whisperers.

Like the horse whisperer. There was a movie where a horse whispered to the young lady that she is going to win the race.
and they loved happily ever after.

photocreditL MSNBC

There is also a show called dog whisperer. I have not watched it yet.
Magagalit ang pusa ko.

 photocredit: MSNBC

And there is also a picture  where people whisper. I do not know why.
photocredit: INQUIRER

Sabay simangot. Salbaheng bata--ako.

Shoes Ku Po

Dear insansapinas,
Some people say that I have a heart of stone. Yong bang parang panghilod. mwhehehe.

I do not easily fall in love and when I do, I am not demonstrative but I walk like I were in the cloud.

I did fall in love. (note the verb did) especially when I do windowshopping or people watching. Confusing? Eh ano ba ang akala ninyo.

I am talking about shoes. May pagka Imelda rin ako kasi noon. I did fall in love with high heeled shoes especially when I was several pounds lighter. I like something that would enhance my height. Yon bang mga 3 feet pa, so I can ask people, how's the weather down there? Ngayon hindi na.

I am 5' 2 " so add three more inches and that would be 5'5" . At the time, high heeled shoes were like my walking and running shoes.

It was only when I moved to San Francisco that I started wearing low-heeled or flat soft Italian leather shoes.

I did not know that high-heeled shoes were also popular in the 15th and 18th century.

Nakita ninyo yong sapatos sa itaas? Cork lang pala yon. That time, ubos ang supply ng cork para sa sapatos ng mga babae. (I cannot put the link, wala na iyong article and I was not able to bookmark it before I logged off).

Eto medyo familiar.

MY UNFORGETTABLE SUMMER

 Dear insansapinas,

This is my unforgettable summer eons ago.
I could not take anymore. We were wading/walking in a shallow rivulet somewhere in a coastal area in Luzon.
My stomach was rumbling as if Manny Pacquiao was defending his championship against Clottey.
It must be the oyster. I finished a few blanched-with-hot-water-and-squeezed-with lemon-newly-gathered oysters from the farm. Oyster farm, that is according to the karinderia where we had our lunch on our way to the barrio where we would have our immersion in culture of indigenous people and at the same time reforest the denuded mountains in that province.

Kung baga forest make-over.

My classmates had already crossed the stream. I was still in the middle where water was at the waist level of a vertically challenged person like me.

They were shouting what I was doing daw? Can you guess? I said "Go ahead. I think there are some small crabs that tried to hitch in my pants. I LIED. You should have seen the dilation of my eyelids, the tremor in my lips and the raising of my brows by a fraction of an inch.

That experience taught me to bring imodium (diatabs for some)  all the time and never eat seafood when you're not sure where they came from.

We were eight in the group and there were four students who came from the elite school.
We were disappointed to know that we were not staying in the barrio; instead we were housed in a forester's house cum seed storage.
Well, it is a  two- storey structure with two big rooms at the second floor and a balcony where most of the cashew seeds for planting were stocked .
Downstairs, there was a kitchen, a dining room and a store room where farm implements were kept for ready use. The forester never stayed there. So there was no power, no water and no electric fan. Whoa.
We did the cooking outside using firewood.
The project had funding and the youth leaders took advantage of our immersion ek-ek project before we  graduated. Two birds with one stone. The stone was as big as a basketball. toinkkk  Yon pala all expenses paid kami pati pagkain at pamasahe as long as we met the required hours. We were supposed to be staying in families in the lowlands.( That was how they called the barrio).  But we were quartered  in that God forsaken place because a member of the group accidentally heard that the male and female members of the other group were not there to plant seeds but to solve an unwanted pregnancy problem. O dava, intriga at kahindik-hindik.
On our arrival to the site, we were welcomed by a long yellow snaaaaake which we found wrapped around a huge  timber that served as a bridge. I almost summon my superhero power to grow a pair wings so I can go back to the civilization. Ngiiii.

The forester came to our rescue. He assured us that it was not the kind of snake that was poisonous. Mahilig lang pumulupot. Ngiii ulit.
The mayor sent us the groceries and  dry fish for our consumption until next marketing day.Every day, the forester would bring us fresh fish and vegetables. We ordered emergency kit too with aspirin, imodium, itch cream and bandages.Kulang na lang, ipadala namin yong pharmacist.

Early morning, with hats and  walking sticks made from tiny branches of a tree, we went to the place assigned to us to plant the seeds. The walking stick helped in making hawi of the talahib, make palo of snake and other forest animals that came to our way. It also served as cane to negotiate the high places where I was tempted to sing the The Sound of Music  upon seeing the beauty below. I forgot my phobia--fear of heights.
The straw hats did not only protect us fro the heat of the sun, We also used them in gathering wild fruits , like mango (wild fruits daw oh) black berries and guava.

We added more imodium to our requests for medicines and emergency kits.

Time for Break and Reaction Part 2

Dear insansapinas,
My tsikiting gubats are blaming me for their being workaholic. When they were growing up, they can see that I worked without let-up to meet so many deadlines.

Now, I can still observe that when I start working on something, I do not stop. The other day, I felt pain in my chest. It came to my mind that it was too much thinking;  self-induced stress working on my pc and reading a lot of books to look for the simplest way by which I can present the concepts in the book more palatable to non-accounting students.

So I stopped momentarily. I can not smell the flowers. Barado ang aking ilong. Babahin ako sa allergy. But I watched the rain falling like they were long strands of white fine hair.

One week to go to beat the deadline for my book project.

Reaction

Dear insansapinas,

7. Debate ng Vice-Presidential candidates .

Pagkatapos may kasabay yong DUH.

Facebook, Forum and Friends

Dear insansapinas,

Oras magbukas ako, nandiyan kaagad at naghaHI.

Sabi niya secret daw. Mahanap nga yong aking karayom at matusok-tusok.

Nabasa ko between the lines na nagnervous
breakdown yata.

Sambong Tea and Veranda

 Dear insansapinas,

I am running out of sambong tea and my brother in SF could not find any in the Filipino store. My relative in the Philippines told me that should I need more, I just e-mail them and they would send me some.

After reading this news about a Filipina tourist in Australia who was reported to have been nabbed for  bringing in illegal drugs, I decided to forego my plan of asking for the tea in the Philippines.

A Filipina tourist detained for allegedly smuggling illegal drugs in Australia has been released from jail after she was found innocent of the crime, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said Saturday.

Filipina Maria Cecilia Silva was freed by Australian Police on Thursday—after five days of detention—after packets of iced tea recovered from her at the Melbourne Airport tested negative for drugs, an article on the DFA website reported.

According to the DFA, Silva was arrested and detained last Saturday upon her arrival at the airport on suspicion that iced tea packets she was carrying contained the illegal drug methamphetamine hydrochloride or shabu.

Australian Customs officials and the federal police expressed regret over the incident.

The Philippine Embassy in Canberra, who assisted Silva during the incident, urged Australian authorities to implement measures to ensure that similar mistakes do not happen again, the DFA reported.

Silva received a compensation of 5,000 Australian dollars (around P209,000) for the harrowing incident, according to the DFA
Baka mapagkamalan ngang drugs yong tea sachets sa mail pag iniscan.

We cannot blame the authorities in Australia for being strict when it comes to illegal drugs. The bad guys make use of so many ways by which drugs can be brought to a country. Here in the US, many airport authorities are already aware of these herbal supplements in the form of tea brought by balikbayans. Eh sa Australia?

I commend the embassy for helping the Filipina and the Australian government for prompt rectification of the error and compensating  the falsely accused tourist.

So if you are bringing some tea, be sure you do not remove them from the  original pack which descibes the product and its uses. It was only later during the trip when I realized that they might open my checked in luggage and find the tea. Baka sabihin nila, pweh.

Verandah
photocredit:

I am afraid of heights. I never go to near the steel  railings of our verandah.  I found it very simple compared to balustrade that are used in the Philippines' balcony or partio which are wide enough to put decorative plants. Some residents, especially the male sit or lean in the railings while smoking.

There were a few celebrities who died because of falling from condo thru the verandah.

One of such victim was the youngest son of Toni Rose Gayda-Lim who is the daughter of the movie icon, Rosa Rosal

He was 26 years old.

News about the father is that he claimed, he designed and built that condo. News about the mother was that she asked her son to smoke outside the room.

Gossips circulating in the internet were that it was not an accident but a suicide and people were of the opinion that it was only later when the death of the young man sunk in to the family because they were not very demostrative in dealing with grief. People can be nasty.

Income Tax Returns, Formula , Octomom and Sandra Bullock

Dear insansapinas,

I postponed going to the tax preparer. Yes VIRGINIA, I am a licensed tax specialist but I ask someone to prepare the IS for me. TAMAD KASI.

I just thought I have to double my effort in finishing the book because  the reference materials  that I borrowed are going to be due next week.  I am not sure if the library is going to allow me to renew the books. Arghhh.

From 60 pages, I now have 76 pages. poor, poor me. Then I am challenged by the drawings I have to make. There are no problems with charts, flowcharts and organizational charts. They are available in the toolbar. The tables are redy for insertion and can be adjusted as to its rows and columns. The problem is the writing of the long formula like the time adjusted value of money and the short formula of EOQ. toinkkk.

And I read  that he house of Octomom is going to be foreclosed. SO?

And I hate James. Oops, not James Yap nor my ex-husband James Bond but Jesse James, the husband of my favorite Sandra Bullock.
The low profile and entrepreneurial Oscar award winning actress who first captivated me in SPEED with Keanu Reeves, then in While you were  sleeping with Bill Pullman and the two Miss Congeniality movies. Oh and I forgot Love Potion # 9.

Tseh.

Sikat naman talaga si KRIS AQUINO

 Dear insansapinas,

Kris Aquino said that she is not leaving the show The Buzz because according to her ABS CBN needs her for the ratings.

Which I believe is TRUE.

However, how would Boy Abunda feel for being ignored as part of the highly rated talk show? (Naah, don't worry about him) he will agree with Kris no matter what. He is a true friend kahit na pinamukha ni Kris na kumikita ng malaki si Boy Abunda dahil sa kaniya. He is a business partner too.

Which I believe is TRUE again.

How would ABS CBN feel about a star who flaunted that she is the one making the program rate?

Multiple Choice

1. Accept that it is true?

2. Lumalaki na ang ulo ni Kris?

3. Pagbigyan because of the political debt to the family?

4. Wala Lang. Pana-panahon lang yan. Gamitan lang yan.

Make hay while the sun shines.

For Kris, there is no such thing as humility.

Ito ang balita.

LAOAG CITY, Philippines—No, controversial TV host Kris Aquino is not leaving her Sunday gossip show "The Buzz" on ABS-CBN, saying the network needs her for the ratings.
Aquino made the statement in an interview with some reporters here on Thursday.
"No. No, no," she said when asked if she would leave the program after she complained last week that she was being used to attack her brother, Senator Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III.
"Actually, if you review carefully what I said, sinabi ko sinabihan ako ng sisters ko na walang quitter sa pamilya. So klaro naman ‘yon. So I will be there on Sunday," she said.
Asked if she would take a leave from her other television shows aside from her late night show "SNN" also on ABS-CBN, Kris answered in the negative.
Kawawa naman ang ABS-CBN, kailangan pa rin naman ako for the ratings," she said.
But she said she agreed to help the campaign her brother on a Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday and on other important days that her presence in the campaign might be needed.
And to her critics,, Kris said she would just ignore them since she could not get them on her side anyway.
Asked why she thought she was the easy target by the senator's rivals in politics, Kris said, "Kasi sikat ako...
Kris also denied critics claim Noynoy was in a panic mode because his ratings in the surveys were dwindling and he was using her to improve his standing in surveys.
She said it was always part of the strategy that she would only join the campaign this March.
"But I don't think it’s a sign of panic. It's a sign of strength," she said.

Good News, Bad News at si Nora Aunor

Dear insansapinas,

Hindi yong nagmake sign of the cross, Silly.

Sabi nga sa commercial, Even a caveman can do it.

Biglang may kumatok.

Although local artists including the popular Dynamix Band gave outstanding performances, Nora’s fans started getting edgy after several announcements that she was coming in “10 mins” were made and there was no Nora. Aunor finally appeared on stage after 2 ½ hours. Ugly cat calls were already reverberating in the theatre when Nora showed up. In a dramatic way, she told her fans that she was not ready to perform and that she will be back in April with her children to entertain them. Nora obliged to pose with some of her fans for a few minutes until the theatre management reminded them that they all had to leave, because their time was up.
“Bakit naman ganyan?” complained an 85-year-old fan who came all the way from Bellingham. Mukhang has been na siya. I’ll just cherish my memories of what she used to be.”
Nora Aunor arrived with her entourage at 1:30 pm on March 4 at the Vancouver International Airport from California with an entourage of 8 people including long time companion John Rendez. Reports immediately spread that she was fidgetty upon arrival and seemed “high” on something.

In the past, when a baby was born, the umbilical cord was thrown away. But today, blood from the umbilical cord can be collected after your baby's birth and donated to a public cord blood bank to help someone with a life-threatening disease.

Yearbook Philippine Science High School

Eh alam ba ninyo kung gaano kabigat yon? More than five pounds.

Lasinggero. Hawak palagi can opener para sa beer at sa alak. mwehehehe Kung akala ninyo nagbibiro ako. Tama kayo. Punta kayo kay Willie Revillame and claim the prize. bwahahaa

Observation: mas nakakapag-isip pala ako pagnakahiga kaysa yong nakaupo. toinkkk

Decision, decision, decision

Dear insansapinas,
Three of my friends were wondering why I don't return calls. I can't. I am at the point where I have to make a decision whether I will continue the book project or not.

One friend asked me  if I am   doing it for the money. Hindi ako plastic pero hindi na. (Kapanipaniwala ba? Who doesn't need money? )

The stress that I get in pushing myself to write;  reading reference materials and solving problems and cases I have prepared for illustrations and assignments can not be compensated by the streams of revenue expected since I am not publishing and marketing it myself like what I did in my previous instructional materials.Mahina lang ang kita. Prestige na lang ang habol. mwehehe

Some do not even believe about the book project.

Like what I had written before, I borrowed materials from the library and bought books for the latest edition about the topic-- Financial Management.

This is the calculator that I bought.

E-mail nga yong nagcommission sa aking gumawa ng libro," how am I doing". Sabi ko okay lang. Kailangan niya at least 500 pages.

May fulfiiment baga. Iba feeling.

Dancing with the Babies

Dear insansapinas,

A study conducted on 120 babies aged five months to two years old showed that infants respond to the rhythm and tempo of music naturally.

Remember the video of the dancing baby girl?

The mothers were provided with head phones so that they would not be able to hear the music. They were also instructed not to move while the babies are on their laps.

PETER GRAVES of Mission Impossible

Dear insansapinas,

One TV series that was not missed by the family, young and old alike (so what if we can not understand the plot of the story and so what if the actors did not talk much) was the original Mission Impossible. The sound track alone would make you run in front of the tv so as not to miss Peter Graves, the original Mr. Phelps before John Voight and Tom Cruise, getting the assignment for the IMF team (not the International Monetary Fund, silly) via self destructing tape or whatever. I can not  understand that time, why  suddenly the tape would blow up or turn into smoke.

Usually at the end of each episode the bad guys realized that they have been conned or have been outdone by the  skillful planning of the I.M.F team.
Peter Graves can no longer accept impossible mission. He will be reporting to the Chief of all Chiefs Up there. He died at the age 83. Today.

Other cast of Mission Impossible were:

1. Greg Morris -the electronics expert. He died in 1996. His son replaced him in the revived Mission Impossible.

2. Peter Lupus, the strong man. He rarely had a talking scene but he was well loved by the women. He posed in the Playgirl mag in 1974, nude.

3. Martin Landau- the disguise expert. He lives in California. He was married to Barbara Bain, also a Mission Impossible actress. They were divorced in 1995.

4 . Barbara Bain- The femme fatale of the mission. She lives in California. Her daughter with Martin Landau is also an actress. She is Juliet Landau, the Drusila in the Buffy, the Vampire Slayer.

Should IM force be caught, the Secretary will disavow...

Ting ting ting ting.(sound track yan).

Plastikan Galore Part 2 KRIS AQUINO VS RUFFA GUTIERREZ

Dear insansapinas,

The plastikan at the The Buzz never happened as Ruffa Gutierrez did not come back to bid farewell to the viewers on her impending transfer to TV5. Instead, a recorded interview was sent to the program. Luhaan blues na naman. Was there really forgiveness? DUH

And to soften the impact of the "drama" of Ruffa, Kris had to share tears again. Double DUH.

Grabeh talaga gagawin nina Boy Abunda para magrate.

Ito pang Famas errm Famas award ni Kris Aquino. Notice that she did not wear any eye make-up. Baka kasi magmukha siyang zombie pag patuloy ang iyak niya at pahid ng mata.

I am so fed up with her mentioning her sisters advice. She could have listened to their advice when she was having illicit relationships with married men.

As a profiler would say,the emotional outburst is not real. The eyebrows never changed, the movement and the eyelids were calculated. Pinipilit pumatak ang luha.

And please those who fought and died (the students, the laborers and the farmers)during the Marcos regime are the real heroes. Some of the ladies were raped and imprisoned.

So please huwag niyong sabihin ang mga bayani. Nag-iinit ang ulo ko.

What love for the country is she talking about? She wanted to stay in Boston when her dad told them that he was going back to the Philippines.

And please huminto na kayong dalawa pagpapalabas na pareho kayong biktima.

Grow up girls. you have kids of your own. Matuto naman kayong magmanage ng buhay ninyo.

Si Juday, iniwanan din ng tatay, pero she never gave an excuse that she is looking for father image and never badmouth anyone.

Halata bang makaJuday. ahehehe

Calculator and Cell Phone

Dear insansapinas,
I could not believe that I missed one day blogging. Last Saturday, I went to Staples to buy a calculator. I thought it is already an obsolete gadget, what with the computer and a customized spreadsheet to do the long, tedious computation for me. But then, I have to switch or minimize  windows to use online calc and or process the formula with excel. ( ang bigat pa naman ng bintana namin)  I bought the cheaper model with a 5 dollar price off. I found out from the cashier that I can get the rebate by mailing the receipt and something, something. Ahhhhhhhhh.

I chose the A/C DC. My brother asked me how long can I consume the batteries? Trust me, it would not last long. It is also the type which has a paper tape to print the numbers in case I need to keep a record. Force of habit of being an Accountant. Arghhhhh.

My other reason for choosing a bigger model is because I am used to working with the remote and phone by my side. Sometimes when the phone rings, I PICKED UP THE REMOTE AND SAY HELLAW. (slap forehead, tseh ang tumawa). Then while I was watching my favorite series one late night, I  remembered that it was the final episode of another favorite TV series so I reached for the remote and wondered why the channel is not changing but I can hear the titutitutitu (a sound when you dial the phone). LINTEK, TELEPONO PALA YONG HAWAK KO.

Eh kung idagdag ko pa ang calculator?

CELL  PHONE

When I went home to the Philippines, I planned to bring my disposable prepaid cell phone, only to find out that it won't work back home. There's no worry. Philippines is the land of cell phones where a household has more than one cell phone, from the father to the 4 year old baby and the helps, I can easily borrow one.

Having watched spy series where cell phones can be used as detonator for bombs, am I surprised of this forward mail  by bayi? Naaah.

He wrote:

Cell phone guns have arrived.  And they are real.
Beneath the digital phone face is a .22 caliber handgun capable of firing four rounds in rapid succession using the standard telephone keypad. European law enforcement officials are stunned by the discovery of these deadly decoys. They say phone guns are changing the rules of engagement in Europe .
Only when you have one in your hand do you realize that they are heavier than a regular cell phone.

When I was working in the cell phone company, we were using the cell phone/two way radio type. They were small but oh boy, they were heavy that I found them very useful as paper weights.

But nothing can beat the first model of cell phones that only people with "money" can afford to buy back in the early 90's. For me, it is also a weapon of destruction. It is bulky and came with a heavier charger.

Pag binato ka noon tiyak kang  I-see-you in ICU.

Grief

Dear insansapinas,

When I came back from vacation, I know I was suffering from grief. Unlike those people who  deny what they feel and deceive themselves that everything is alright, I do recognize and deal with it. I slept a lot. (oops).  I just wrote that my oversleeping was due to anxiety of not being able to start my book project.  Lately, however, I realized, it is not the cause; not even the cough syrup that I am taking for my cough. I know that when I sit down to work, the ideas just flow naturally. Naah. I decided to slowdown (that is the carpet is now littered again with books and materials that I need as I watch TV while formulating accounting problems).

It is grief. This must be the same feeling described to me by my deceased mother-in-law who before her death intimated to me her fear--knowing her friends were dying and her loved ones getting sick, she felt alone in this world that two weeks after I moved to LA temporarily, she died.  But my MIL was in her 80's at that time and so were her contemporaries. My friends and colleagues were young. Hardly in their 50's except for one who already retired.

I wrote before that I found out that four of my former faculty members passed away. They were not only my staff, they were my friends as well. I forgot to cry at that time I heard the  bad news. And I realized I am still nursing their loss when I arrived back from the Philippines. Let me cry for them.

One of them was my assistant who worked very hard that I feared he would have a heart ailment. He was so dedicated in his job that he did not miss one working day. He was so responsible that he would stay in the office late in the nights just  to finish class schedules and assignments of faculty members. Seventy per cent of my work hours as Dean was spent on unnecessary meetings to feed the big ego of some senior professors who literally dot your "i"s and cross your "t's" as they critiqued the curricular programs which were outside their specializations.

My assistant was gay who never came out of  the closet. God knows how he struggled to become "straight". He married and had  three children. The eldest  became my goddaughter. He did everything to provide for his family.  Aside from teaching, he took in boarders in their apartment and later in the house that he bought. He died of aniurysm while he was vacationing in  Baguio together with his wife and children.

He visited me in San Francisco twice when he toured with his wife in Canada and US. I knew then that he was disappointed to have been by-passed in the promotion. He was originally assigned in the College by the university administration as their eyes and ears to "this" renegade dean. Later,I won him on my side.

The other faculty who died was a businessman and a practising CPA. He was also a very competent member of the staff who used his own money to help the students in their university activities. He was robbed and killed in his office. That time, he was estranged from his wife and lived alone by himself. I knew the story about his failed marriage. That was how I was close to my friends and colleagues in the corporate and academe. Nakikipag-inuman ng diet coke after office hour while they poured their hearts out.

The third died of loneliness and depression. His wife of many years got an alzheimer's and he was pressured to retire by an envious new head of the department.

The fourth died due to complications of diabetes. She was only in her early 40's.

A relative by affinity also died of complications of diabetes days before I left the US.

But then there is another grief  that I am suffering from. Grief is not only an emotional response to a loss because of death. It has also social and psychological dimension associated with loss of bonding to a person close to him/her.

I hate being frank because I know I can hurt other peoples' feelings. But I prefer to be the villain to correct what I sensed is wrong. I have been critical of people who treat their over 21year old children as kids. So when they mentioned kids, I cringed. Anong bata ang pinagsasabi mo? I also disliked parents who spoil their children, overprotect them and shield them from criticisms.

These will be the individuals who will succumb to nervous breakdown at the first sign of trouble. These will be the individuals who can not take criticisms because they were used to being defended of their wrongdoing when they were young..

These are the individuals who need affirmation, constant encouragement and applause for the little things they have done which are mostly for themselves. These are the individuals who became selfish and think nothing but themselves as the center of the universe. They can not  take rejection that they woud resort to everything from tantrums to feigning that they're sick just to get the attention of people ignoring them.  They become destructive both to himself/herself and people who became victim of their unhealthy ego.

These are the people who will always find excuses for their actions but would not reflect on whether their actions hurt other people too.

I grieve for the parents and the children.
